The Volcano of Kameni Hora is one of the newest in the Aigaiou Arc. Its volcanic eruption must have happened in the reign of Antigonus Gonatas (277-240BC) according to the reports of Strabo (Geograf.A, c59, 18), of Ovidio (Metamorphoses, XV, p.296-306), and as to references by Pausanias in his Periegesis, II, 34).
Ovidio also mentions that the whole area around the village of Kameni was an extensive and rich fruit plain, but the violent volcanic eruption covered much of the area in huge volumes of lava and ash.
If you walk up the western edge of the peninsula, you will see the seat of Kalokoumparo covered by lava limestone that reaches the coast. The crater has a diameter of 100 metres and a depth of about 60 metres. The highest edge of the cone is 425 m
The volumes of lava are scattered kerostilvikos ypersthenikos andesite (El.Platakis 1952) and they have taken the form of a giant stone river, which stretches for 1500 meters to the sea, forming a black cape, as locals call the low hill of the headland just below the Volcano.
